Tesla is preparing to launch a major project aimed at producing advanced artificial intelligence chips, according to company CEO Elon Musk. The initiative, known as the “Terafab” project, is expected to begin within the next seven days and is designed to support Tesla’s growing focus on autonomous driving and AI-powered technologies.
Musk revealed that the new facility will manufacture specialized AI chips needed to run Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance systems, including its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The company is currently developing its fifth-generation AI processor, often referred to as the AI5 chip, which is expected to deliver significantly improved performance for autonomous vehicles and other AI applications.
The Tesla chief has previously highlighted the challenge of securing enough chips from external suppliers to meet the company’s expanding technology needs. Even with optimistic projections from existing partners, Musk indicated that production levels may still fall short of Tesla’s long-term demand. As a result, building a large-scale chip manufacturing facility could help Tesla maintain greater control over its supply chain and accelerate the development of its autonomous technology.
Tesla has already been working with leading semiconductor manufacturers around the world. Musk confirmed that the company collaborates with Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung to produce its AI chips. He has also mentioned the possibility of future discussions with Intel, although no formal agreement has been announced so far.
The Terafab concept represents a significant expansion of Tesla’s manufacturing strategy. Musk described it as similar to the company’s “Gigafactories” but on an even larger scale, emphasizing that massive production capacity will be necessary to support Tesla’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and self-driving vehicles.
If successfully launched, the Terafab project could mark an important step in Tesla’s effort to build a dedicated ecosystem for AI hardware. By increasing chip production capacity, the company hopes to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI and autonomous vehicle market.
