Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has left for a short official visit to Saudi Arabia as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East. The trip comes at a time when regional hostilities show little sign of easing, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The visit is being made at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the trip, the Pakistani premier is expected to hold talks with the crown prince to discuss the escalating regional situation, security concerns in the Gulf, and ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The conflict in the region has intensified following Iranian drone and missile attacks on Gulf targets. Tehran has said the strikes were aimed at American and Israeli sites after large-scale military operations against Iran. The developments have raised concerns among regional governments about the possibility of a broader conflict affecting stability across the Middle East.
Pakistan has maintained close diplomatic engagement with Saudi Arabia during the crisis. Officials say the visit reflects Islamabad’s effort to play a constructive diplomatic role and promote dialogue during a period of heightened tensions.
Earlier this month, Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, travelled to Saudi Arabia for discussions with Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud. The meeting focused on the security risks posed by Iranian drone and missile attacks and possible steps to address them under the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed by the two countries last year.
Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement has also played a role in easing tensions. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar recently said that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts helped prevent further escalation of Iranian attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Government officials in Islamabad have repeatedly stressed the strong strategic partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. They say both countries remain committed to supporting each other during times of regional uncertainty.
The prime minister’s visit highlights Pakistan’s intention to remain actively involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining regional stability while strengthening its long-standing relationship with Saudi Arabia.
