Google has quietly refreshed the look of its lightweight navigation app, Google Maps Go, by introducing a redesigned gradient icon. The visual update arrives just days after the main Google Maps application received a similar design change, bringing a more unified appearance across the company’s mapping apps.
Google Maps Go is designed for Android devices with limited storage, slower processors, or weaker internet connections. Instead of being a full standalone application, it works as a lightweight web-based version of Google Maps. This approach allows users with older or entry-level smartphones to access essential navigation features without slowing down their devices or using large amounts of storage.
With the latest update, the app’s icon now mirrors the gradient style seen in the main Google Maps logo. The new design still includes the familiar location pin but adds a “GO” label to clearly distinguish the lightweight version from the standard app. A subtle shadow effect around the label helps users easily recognize the app in their home screen or app drawer.
Interestingly, the change focuses only on the icon. The functionality and internal features of Google Maps Go remain the same. Since the app operates as a Progressive Web App (PWA), many updates happen on the web side rather than through frequent downloads from the Google Play Store.
