The Government of Pakistan has announced that Friday will be observed as an additional weekly holiday to support energy-saving efforts across the country. The decision comes as part of a wider plan of austerity measures aimed at stabilizing the national economy amid current regional and global challenges.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the move during a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of energy conservation policies across all federal ministries and departments. He also instructed officials to implement work-from-home arrangements where possible and ensure compliance with the new guidelines.
A special committee, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, has been formed to monitor the implementation of these austerity measures. The committee will review daily reports and conduct audits to ensure transparency and effectiveness. Federal ministries have been directed to document steps taken, including images of vehicles removed from operation under the energy-saving plan.
In addition to energy conservation, the Prime Minister highlighted efforts to strengthen tax collection and reduce evasion. Technology-based monitoring systems have been introduced in sectors like sugar, cement, cigarettes, and fertilizer, with plans to expand to textiles, leather, paper, automobiles, and beverages. These measures are expected to boost revenue and support economic stability.
